Airfare to South America?

What is a good price for airfare to South America? We are planning on leaving Dec. 17-19, 2008 and returning Jan 4-6, 2009 (dates are somewhat flexible at this point). We are looking at Thursday-Tuesday flights as those tend to be cheaper. So far, I have found ticket prices around $1,200/person. Is this good or will waiting yield something cheaper?
If you are flying in December you are better of, following closely the fares and buy about at least 60 days in advance (even 90)

$1200, wil be Ok, but depends on origin and destination! And if you are visiting only one place!
