Anyone have suggestions for a relatively cheap summer vacation (leaving from Los Angeles)?

My boyfriend and I are celebrating our 1 year anniversary in June, and we want to go on a trip. Due to the weak dollar and expensive flights, Europe is no longer an option. We considered Costa Rica, but the flight taxes cost more than the actual flight ticket! We're discouraged. :( We would REALLY like to leave the States, but can't really think of any nice, sorta cheap places. We have a new credit card JUST for this trip, so I guess you could say that our budget is about $2,000.

Rather than looking at international locations how about considering the following for car rides away:
- Vegas & hoover dam
- Grand Canyon
- SF area (you can visit Monterey / Carmel and Napa at the same trip).

If you really want interntional - then go for a cruise (to the Mexico would be the closest from where you are). The room and food and transportation are all taken care of from the cruise so all you need is money for excursions, drinks, and souvenirs.
