Day 5 - Getting out of Sydney
Take a break from the bustle of city life. Rent a car and drive west to the mountains. Or take a daytrip north or south of Sydney.
- Driving in Australia
If you rent a car, you have the choice of stopping where you will and can adjust your time as you want. Here are some pointers on driving in Australia. - The high blue yonder
Once you get beyond the city limits, it should be less than hour to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, but you may wish to do a few stops along the way. From Katoomba you could proceed to Jenolan Caves through the Hartley Valley. - Mt Tomah Botanic Garden
This is the cool-climate garden of the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens. It's not along the road to Jenolan Caves but on the way back to Sydney along Bells Line of Road. - North from Sydney
If, instead, you'd like to drive north from Sydney, here's one way to go up the coast to Port Stephens, or veer inland into the Hunter Valley with its vineyards and wineries. - Hunter Valley
This is New South Wales wine country, lush green countryside dotted with vineyards and some of Australia's most famous wineries. - South from Sydney
Through scenic coastal towns and beaches, past Wollongong, Kiama, and perhaps on to Narooma and Bermagui. - Jervis Bay beaches
If you didn't want to go too far south, Jervis Bay and its truly white beaches may be the daytrip destination for you.
What they say
- A few days outside of Sydney
"Sydney was awesome, but so was Melbourne! I didn't get as much time in Melbourne. It's more laid back than Sydney. Next time (I'm already wanting to do another trip, too), I want a few more days in Melbourne, and a few days outside of Sydney (Blue Mountains, and such)." - Great area for walking around
"Oh yeah, the Aquarium! I'd forgotten about that. It's only a few blocks from where we stayed when in Sydney. It's in Darling Harbour, very close to Cockle Bay ... great area for just walking around."
