This South African "thing" of giving money for a "Chrismas box" to all and sundr

who come begging at the door? Does it still exist? Here in Germany, thankfully, people are not so blatantly cheeky to ask outright for a Christmas box. When we still lived in SA, right after the election of Nelson Mandela as President, my reply to each Christmas box beggar was: "Why must I as a whitey give you a Christmas box now? You blacks are in power now, and therefore us whiteys must get a Christmas box from all of you". Of course, my silly joke was never understood. And I still gave a "Christmas box" only to those who had served me in some way or another during the year.
Hello Cakes,
Yes the begging for Christmas boxes still exists and it can be a nuances sometimes. You still find the municipal workers and mail delivery man asking for Christmas boxes. I have made piece with this over the years and have felt guilty in some ways because we have so much and others not. We are making special gifts for them and put some basic necessities in this and wrap it up in some nice paper. You must see the appreciation from the people receiving these gifts. You know what, you also feel good afterward for making someone else happy.
