What is the best currency to take to Barbados?

You can bring American travellers cheques and get them cash at the international bank.

Not all banks in Barbados do currency exchange, like the one in Southern Plaza, they wouldn't do that. The best bet is in Bridgetown, its capital, or Sheraton Centre in Christ Church.

Make sure you have a mixture, some American dollars, but you must be aware that the locals are a sucker for U.S. dollars and can rip you off. So I'd say bring also your ATM, and some Barbadian currency.

For 2 weeks, I'd say $1000 USD of all mixtures to be on safe side.

Barbados is expensive in general. Local transit (big blue bus, yellow mini bus or route taxi) is $1.50 BDS each way.

Please note: Not ALL ATM's accept cards from like Canada, or whatever. Gas station ones do work, though, from my experience, but I am not sure if it applies to all. If you have credit cards or debit ones with Visa or Mastercard logo, bring them, if you don't, at least be thankful for ATMs. :)
