What really happens during this event?

I still consider myself a YAP newbie although I contribute a lot in other forums. I am just wondering ... what happens when a thumbs down is given to a reply to a question? Are points deducted from the replier's ratings or is this just an ego trip for those who give these thumbs down?

I cannot understand why a thumbs down is given to an opinion. An opinion is an opinion and it is neither right nor wrong as this is what a person thinks or wants. How can a person be "penalized" for writing what s/he thinks?

Is this the prevailing culture in this forum or is this just plain politics being played?
