What was life like as a Muslim in the Soviet Union?
Can only speak based on my own experience. I'm a Christian but I used to live in Russia with my Muslim husband and I would say he was treated with the according amount of respect that Russians would treat any other person of a different nationality or religion. Russians are not racists and never have been. It's just that the times we were living in were tough times back then and people were frustrated with the political system and changes happening at the time so if somebody was not treated well it was not because he was a Muslim or a Buddhist but because people just have enough of not having food in the stores and not being able to earn a descent salary to live their kids. Generally though, my husband and I never ever had any kind of confrontation with the people and never experienced hostility of any sort. We were equally respected and treated with everybody else.
