Why is the Netherlands called Holland? and the people called the Dutch?
Holland is a nickname, dates back to the time when there was not yet an country called Nederland, (the Netherlands in English) when the duchy of Holland was the most prosperous in the area and when the new country came into existence the old name stuck.
A bit like England for Great Britain or the UK.
The word Dutch might have even older roots, as the word Diets is/was used to name the language and people living in all of what is now Germany and the Netherlands, and maybe more. The word stuck as Deutch to Germany and German. And only in English it is used for what the locals would call Nederlands.
One person I met did make the link between the Duchy of Holland, (an area governed by a Duke,) and Dutch or Diets as traditional name for the locals of the area. I have never seen proof but it sounds as as good an explanation why this name stuck in English as any other explanation I ever heard.
